Lion Dies at Kanpur Zoo Amid Treatment for Infections

Farewell to a King: 15-Year-Old Lion Dies at Kanpur Zoo

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 15-year-old male lion—once the pride of Gorakhpur Zoo—took his last breath at the Kanpur Zoo this week.

Transferred just months ago, the lion had been under constant medical supervision, battling multiple infections and signs of aging. Despite the efforts of the veterinary staff, he succumbed to complications late Wednesday evening.

From Gorakhpur to Kanpur: A Lion’s Final Journey

The lion, named Rudra, had spent most of his life in Gorakhpur Zoo and was moved to Kanpur as part of an inter-zoo exchange program aimed at enhancing genetic diversity. Unfortunately, the change in environment, compounded by existing health issues, took a toll on his fragile health.

Veterinary officers at Kanpur Zoo noted that Rudra was already unwell at the time of arrival, showing signs of chronic infection, low appetite, and weakness. He was kept under isolation and received antibiotics, IV fluids, and supplements regularly.

Zoo Officials Speak Out

“We tried our best,” said a senior official at the Kanpur Zoo. “His vitals were unstable for several days. His age and medical condition made recovery difficult.”

The zoo’s in-house medical team conducted a post-mortem examination, which confirmed liver and intestinal infections as primary causes of death.

Animal Welfare Concerns Rise Again

This incident has reignited concerns about the stress animals face during zoo transfers, especially senior animals. Animal welfare groups have questioned the timing and need for the transfer, suggesting Rudra may have been better off living out his final days in a familiar environment.

Social media users from Kanpur and Gorakhpur shared emotional posts mourning the lion, calling him a “king who deserved a better end.”

Final Goodbye

Kanpur Zoo staff held a quiet tribute in Rudra’s memory, a moment of silence among keepers and caretakers who had grown fond of the majestic feline in his short stay.

As one caretaker whispered,

“He was old, but he still had that royal walk. We’ll miss that.”
